Family Living

Conversion of this unfinished lower level consisted of the construction of a bathroom, a bedroom for a teenage boy, a home theatre center, workout room, kitchen, bar space, and a gaming area for a pool table and entertainment.

As the space was unfinished, no particular design challenges were experienced. Certain mechanical systems required relocation and modification to facilitate the design, a separate thermostat and zone dampening system was installed to provide specific climate control of the space, and interesting lighting effects were installed that help to define the spaces of this open plan design.

Before

An elaborate video projection system was installed that includes an 8′ screen that conceals itself into the ceiling and all of the audio and speaker systems are built into the architecture of the room. To remain sympathetic to the existing conditions of the first and second floor of the home, radius corner drywall returns were installed in addition to hand selected Birch doors and trim, custom constructed Birch cabinetry, Birch column surrounds, dentil mouldings fir the coffered ceiling in the media area, and the balustrade leading to the area precisely matches that of the one leading to the second floor of the house.

After

Tile was installed in the high traffic and work areas for easy maintenance and as a design detail for the new space and a creative combination of painting and staining of the surfaces was selected to blend with the existing conditions of the house. The bedroom does include appropriate egress and several noteworthy architectural elements including a walk-in closet and separate entrance to the new bath.
